GOP Michigan Legislators take over $11 MILLION from taxpayers for their own businesses but refuse to allocate $2.6 BILLION to Michiganders
While pressuring Governor Whitmer to relinquish her right to enact emergency orders, GOP legislators continue to withhold $2.6 billion of federal funds from Michiganders who need help with unemployment benefits, housing, and food assistance. Some of these withheld funds could also be used to open schools. From the outset of the pandemic, Republican legislators have wanted to go back to business-as-usual. But they haven’t wanted to allocate tax dollars or enact legislation that would support our common welfare.
At least 14 members of Michigan’s House of Representatives and six members of the Senate have borrowed a total of $11,085,321 from the Small Business Administration’s “Paycheck Protection Program” under the 2020 CARES Act. They’ve borrowed this for their own businesses or for family members, or for their own organizations (i.e. churches and parochial schools). These loans have an interest rate of 1% and up to 40% of it is forgivable.
While the GOP legislative majority in the State houses have appropriated tax dollars for their own businesses, Michiganders have suffered. The amount of tax dollars borrowed by or granted to our state legislators are listed below. Please call your legislators in both the House and Senate to tell them that our common welfare as Michiganders should matter at least as much to them as their own private business concerns! (Feel free to call all the legislators on the list below if you have time!) Remind them that their selfish behavior will be remembered at the ballot box! – Michigan Resistance
