For almost 100 years, the ACLU has worked in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Currently the ACLU is ramping up its capabilities to fight new threats to immigrants’ rights; reproductive rights; LGBT rights; the First Amendment; and civil rights.
The Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C., is home to the nation’s premier election law experts, fighting for our fundamental right to participate in the political process. The CLC is a leading player in the challenge to partisan gerrymandering and resistance to voter suppression.

The Center for Michigan is a “think-and-do” tank founded by former newspaper publisher and UM Regent Phil Power. A nonprofit organization whose objective is to make Michigan a better place by encouraging greater understanding and involvement in policy issues among the state’s citizens and making sure their voices are heard. Bridge Magazine does this by calling forth citizen views, amplifying those views and projecting them into the halls of power.
The Ecology Center believes that the central question of our time is how human beings are going to thrive in the world without destroying the earth’s ability to sustain us. In the face of enormous environmental challenges, virtually all sectors of our society are now scrambling to create solutions, and the Ecology Center plays a critical role in advancing the best models.
Freedom House is a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world who are seeking asylum in the United States and Canada. Their mission is to uphold a fundamental American principle, as inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, of providing safety for those “yearning to breathe free.”
Guided by the belief that all people deserve to live free from oppression and to be treated with justice, compassion and dignity, they offer a continuum of care and services to residents. They advocate for systemic change that more recognizes the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
ILRC works with immigrants, community organizations, legal professionals, law enforcement, and policy makers to improve the lives of immigrants. They work through three program areas, policy and advocacy, civic engagement and capacity building. In 2015, the ILRC distributed grants to 60 nonprofit organizations helping to advance the civil rights of immigrants. The ILRC leads a concerted effort against unjust immigration enforcement, advocated for legislation to protect immigrant families, and helped defeat anti-immigrant policies.
MI LCV is the only nonpartisan political organization in Michigan with land, air, and water at the center of their work. They work to advance policies, mobilize voters, elect officials who will restore our state’s commitment to preserving Michigan’s natural resources and to hold elected officials accountable for the by elected officials every day impact your health.
The Michigan League for Public Policy is a nonpartisan policy institute that advocates for policy change to promote economic opportunity for all. It is a state-level organization that addresses poverty in a comprehensive way. They examine state revenues and expenditures and their impact on low-income people. All the League’s work is done through a race equity lens.
